The Beginning: The Inspection:
My dream first started on a late afternoon while talking to my best friend Mike about cars, Volkswagens where the main topic of that night and we started disagreeing on the fact that their are FREE BUGS out there....Just waiting to be picked up.. Not soon after I spouted "Well you find me a free bug, and I'll go pick it up" I recieved a call. THE NEXT DAY!!! While on my lunch Mike gave me a call and said Hey I found one!!! and its On your way home. I skurried to a computer and looked at it on '(www.thesamba.com)' I wrote down the guys name and phone number and called him on my way home, Mike met me there and we agreed that this was 'The ONE' lol. With the help of a friend named Brian and a few other friends I got it home and in my garage! The Main picture above is a picture of it the day after I got it! An't she a beauty.... And I admit to being PROVED WRONG, FREE BUGS are out there!!! Just look for them!! THx Mike again!!!
Less then a week or so later Mike came over and we decided to start disecting the bug and learning about its past and start giving the Freebug a good look over to insure it is worthy of carrying a human life around in :) It wasnt but a few hours a the most we had the body fully removed the pan was stripped of all components minus the front beam and steering assembly. I was in sheer awe of how fast we broke this car down into parts! LoL I can't help but laugh every time. Now the bug came with everything but an engine! Most of the items we took off the car, are going to be going back on the car once it is finished! As a blanket statement These car's are cheep! I mean where else can you find a tran's for a car thats built up for 600 or less! Tires are 35 each for the front and 45 each for rears! Over all the car can be expensive if you are trying to do a full restore! but even then its still feasable to do. Well proceeding with inspection there was a great amount of rusted area from the passangers seat back to the battery tray. now this is very common among bugs and many ways to fix this you can purchase the whole side of the pan or even just the battery tray area and weld it in making it brand new... I opted for a less expensive way and Mike purchased a 20gauge sheet metal roughly 4x3 I welded the puppy in and Mike grinded to perfection. after repairs we used a rubber undercoating from Eastwood Co. With the undercoating gun and man does that stuff work! If you are working in a confined area For the Love of god! Please use a GOOD RESPERATOR! Not a dinsy paper mask! I was HELLA DUMB! lol Click here For a picture of what proper equipment to use, Yes I have eye protection on my head! Well after the main rust areas where inspected and fixed It was time to start "customizing and rebuilding"!
